Academic Advancement
Magnet Schools: Cobb County offers 6 different alternative programs for motivated high school students. Private schools usually can't be as competitive with their sports and music programs because they just don't have the enrollment it takes. Magnet is like getting Harvard academics and UGA football all in the same place. Students have their own counselors and an administration focused on retaining your student in the program, but that student is still part of the general population for sports and music programs. Whether it's International Studies, Math and Medical Science, or an I.B. Program, the fact is that in Cobb County we have choices. And, as long as parents educate themselves as to what those choices are, any researched decision is probably the right one for your student. Click HERE for more information. Duke Tip Program: Would your student be interested in a summer camp at UGA offering courses in Criminal Law & Mock Trial? Cryptography/Codebreaking? Introduction to Veterinary Medicine? Robotics? Sports Medicine? The Brain, Intelligence & Creativity? How about a weekend course in Chinese? Or, the chance to take a Nintendo Wii apart and learn how its lasers and gyroscopes make it work? Sound interesting? Well, if students do not take the necessary steps as 7th graders, they need not apply as 8th, 9th or 10th graders because those opportunities will not be available to them. More than 60% of 7th grade students at Walker School take the SAT to try to become part of Duke TIP (Talent Identification Program). Why not your student? Getting involved with TIP leaves the door open for students to take advantage of these worthwhile opportunities whether it be this summer or three years from now AND it looks great on a college application, even if the student never participates in a camp or class. Students with an interest in languages, travel, different cultures and/or social studies should consider this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to travel to China as a guest of the Chinese government. This 2-week summer camp is available through the collaberation of UCLA's Confucius Institute (and the branch of the Confucius Institute here at KSU) and Hanban, an office of the Chinese government. Every year, North Cobb's School for International Studies sends about 40 students to join the group of 1,000 students from the U.S. and U.K. who apply and are invited to China. (The only cost to students is that of airfare and passport/visa fees.) This year, Lost Mountain was represented on the trip! Click HERE for more information.
